Feeding a baby on the go is never easy. Fresh, nutritious meals are essential, but preparing just a few spoonfuls of food can take time, and parents are often left juggling convenience, safety, and taste. That’s exactly the challenge Tilly Beazely faced when her son started weaning—and it inspired her to create the Wean Machine. The Inspiration Behind the Wean Machine
Tilly wanted a way to provide fresh, home-cooked baby food wherever she went. She realised that existing products—like garlic presses or potato ricers—were either too small, too big, or simply not designed to safely handle heat or provide a full feeding solution.
Her vision was clear: a device that combined a bowl, spoon, and mashing system, allowing parents to prepare soft, healthy meals quickly, reduce waste, and even involve children in learning about food.
“It has to be easy to clean and to feed the child,” says Tilly. “By mashing food directly into an attached bowl, it provides soft food for teething children and ensures fresh, healthy meals every time.”
Design and Manufacturing Excellence
At 3fD, we worked closely with Tilly to bring her vision to life using our design-to-manufacture model, which integrates product design and manufacturing into a single process. This meant Tilly didn’t have to coordinate between multiple suppliers, and every detail could be perfected from concept to production.
Attention to Detail
Every aspect of the Wean Machine was carefully engineered:
-
Materials: The main body and handle are polyoxymethylene, while other components like the cover and grates are polypropylene, all with anti-bacterial properties.
-
Precision Manufacturing: Injection-moulded components were refined to eliminate visible manufacturing “tells” such as seams or ejector marks. We even redesigned nozzles and moulds to centre these marks and improve cosmetic quality.
-
Functional Spoon Design: The soft-tipped spoon was designed with the right balance of rigidity, smoothness, and safety, with inlaid branding that complies with printing standards for baby products.
“Sometimes with injection moulding we were left with jagged edges, so we lined the nozzle with chrome to ensure a smooth finish,” explains Austen Miller, Senior Partner at 3fD.
A Product Recognised for Its Design
The precision and innovation behind the Wean Machine have not gone unnoticed. Its design is now featured in Design for Manufacture (DFM) lectures at Loughborough University, showcasing how careful integration of design and manufacturing can create a product that is both functional and visually flawless.
Helping Families Without Compromise
The Wean Machine isn’t just clever—it’s practical. Families can prepare meals from almost any fruit or vegetable, reducing waste and saving time. Leftovers can be refrigerated or frozen, and mealtime no longer needs to compromise what the rest of the family is eating.
Bringing Ideas to Life with 3fD
The Wean Machine perfectly demonstrates the value of our integrated design and manufacturing approach. From refining small details in moulding to ensuring compliance with US FDA safety standards, 3fD ensures that every product is engineered for safety, usability, and longevity.
