What is a Product Strategist?

1698

It’s a title that often raises eyebrows. When I say I’m a product strategist, people sometimes think it’s just another way of saying product designer. But it’s more than that. A designer makes something work. A strategist makes sure it matters — to the business, the market, and the people who use it.

Often, the first thing a prospect will ask me is one of two questions:

“What will the budget be to design this product?” (before I have all the information)
“Here’s the full feature list and the target cost — can you make it?”

On the surface, those feel like reasonable asks. But they reveal something deeper: a binary way of leading product development.

Binary leadership assumes you can lock in every answer upfront — budget, features, cost — as if the path is linear.

But product development isn’t linear. It’s full of moving parts: market shifts, user insights, technical trade-offs, and cost pressures. A product strategist approaches it differently:

  • We don’t guess the budget on day one — we refine it as real information emerges.
  • We don’t accept a fixed feature list — we test which features actually matter
  • We don’t just design to a target cost — we balance performance, experience, manufacturability,
    and margin.
  • And if the gross profit margin is threatened, we don’t just push ahead blindly — we pivot.
It’s not about being vague. It’s about refusing to be binary.

Because products succeed when they’re treated as a living strategy, not a static checklist. And here’s the truth: products rarely fail because of poor design. They fail because something else was missed.

  • The business motivation wasn’t clear.
  • The cost structure killed gross profit before launch.
  • Manufacturing realities came too late.
  • The product looked good, but didn’t connect with real human motivations.

A product strategist exists to stop those blind spots becoming fatal. Not by adding complexity, but by bringing everything together:

✔ Business case
✔ Cost structure
✔ Market opportunity
✔ Engineering
✔ Human motivations
✔ Physical realities of materials, forces, and manufacture

When you think about your own project, ask yourself:

Are you solving just for design… or for the whole picture?

Because only when everything is aligned — business, market, engineering, and human experience — does a product not just exist, but truly thrive.
